Roy Lerner

One of the foremost members of the New New Painters, Roy Lerner exhibits his modern paintings of modulation, movement and momentum at Cooper Classics Collection. Now through the end of May.

In his essay, "A leap in perception; Modulation, Momentum and Implied Movement," Roy Lerner writes, "Everything is Modulation. Modulation is the engine that drives all life…I use rhythm and repeating patterns in a variety of scales, from very tiny details to the overall composition of a big painting. These patterns imply more to come. This implication builds momentum and implies movement."

Christopher White of C. W. White Gallery, concurs, "Lerner articulates color and composition through modulation and rhythm."

Lerner's work shows mature, yet youthful forms of color, texture and relief. The marks look like improvisation. There is time between each stroke- both slow pauses and fast moments. Lerner's mastery of select modern media such as acrylic paints and transparent gels evokes multiple abstract images that the viewer can reconstruct into pieces of nature, films, and the ongoing cycle of life. But, the paintings are not fragments- there is nothing missing. Each piece is a finished set. The audience can applaud.

Lerner's work has been internationally exhibited and is in various private and public collections. It is on display at the National Arts Club, New York and at Gallery One, Toronto. Four paintings will also be part of a New New Painters group show at the National Gallery in Prague mid April.
